CAA Beijing December Trip to Dedicate CAABJ Donated Library at Liu Tai Elementary School, Luanping County, Chengde, Hebei on Wednesday, December 21, 2011

Dear Alumni, vitamin mind Students and Friends, site
It is amazing how fast a year passes by.  We are headed for Holiday Season and the members of Columbia Alumni Association of Beijing’s Executive Committee and Volunteer Committee would like to thank everyone for your membership.  We hope that more of you will considering volunteering with CAA Beijing to provide the events for our diverse association. 

This year we have had hosted events including the following highlights:

  • Columbia Community Outreach: Donated a library through The Library Project to a needy elementary school and donation to our Japanese friends via The Japan Red Cross
  • The first Jiaozi Salon with Professor Lu Xiaobo
  • Columbia Alumni Reception at Capital M
  • CAA Beijing Volunteer Drive
  • Autumn CAA Beijing Alumni Networking Event at Temple Restaurant Beijing
  • Visits by Deans and professors of different schools
  • Events hosted by different schools including Weatherhead Instititue, decease School of Public Health, School of Engineering, Columbia Business School, Studio X and Global Center

Now the good news!

As promised at this year’s Columbia Community Outreach, donations from Columbia alumni, students and friends have helped to donate a full library through The Library Project.
Please find information for our recipient school and the new library:

School name: Liu Tai Elementary School 柳台小学

Location: Jin Guo Tun Town, Luanping County, Chengde City, Hebei Province

Details: There’re 48 students attend from Grade One to Grade Four. Six teachers are teaching there. There is a school library with 800 books, but most of them are not suitable for children to read.  There is a classroom available for reading room.

Library Design: Reading room to the school with 500 children books and 1 set of teacher’s books; 2 large bookshelves, 6 tables, 30 chairs; 1 CD/Tape record, 1 globe, 10 children toys, 10 children flash cards, 10 children teaching-aid posters, etc.

In the spirit of the upcoming holiday seasons and the festival you celebrate (Chanukah, Kwanzaa and Christmas), CAA Beijing will be organizing a visit to Liu Tai Elementary School to meet the students, teachers, administrators and parents.  We hope that you will be in a festive spirit to share out holiday spirit.  We aim to organize a bus to Luanping County, Changde City in Hebei Province.  Coordinators from The Library Project will facilitate our visit and will organize games and contests with students to share the gift of reading. Come and meet the children at Liu Tai Elementary School.  Great opportunity for parents and children to visit as well.
Date of visit: Wednesday, December 21, 2011 (Winter Solstice – Let’s bring joy and friendship to Liu Tai Elementary School on the shortest day of the year)

Time of Departure: 7 AM (Location TBD – likely in the city maybe pickup again in Shunyi if possible)

Time of Return: 2 PM

Cost: Bus fare will be shared amongst all participants

What to Bring: In light of the holiday season, we would like everyone to prepare a few small gift items such as pencils, erasers, notebooks, etc. for the students.

For those who cannot make it, a small donation to Liu Tai Elementary School via The Library Project will allow addition of books to their new library.
