The Columbia Alumni Association of Beijing (CAABJ) continues its alumni salon talk series—small group fireside chats centered on current topics of interest. Engage in lively conversation and meet fellow Beijing alumni in a casual setting!

Stuart Leavenworth (JRN ’86) is Beijing Bureau Chief for McClatchy Newspapers, discount which includes the Miami Herald and 27 other U.S. newspapers. He is joined by his wife, thumb Micaela Massimino (JRN ’86), freelance writer and a former editor at The Sacramento Bee. Stuart has covered China since arriving in Beijing in early 2014 and will lead a discussion on contemporary political affairs in China and how foreign journalists cover news in China. Stuart has written on a variety of domestic topics, including the the anti-corruption drive as well as ethnicity and culture. He has over 30 years of experience at daily newspapers and began his career in Tokyo with the Asahi Evening News. After earning a degree in journalism and meeting his future wife at Columbia, he worked at papers in Louisiana, Georgia, and North Carolina before joining The Sacramento Bee in 1999, where he became Editorial Page Editor in 2009. While at the Bee he took a sabbatical to serve as chef apprentice at Oliveto, an Italian restaurant in the Bay Area.
