Let me take this opportunity to thank those who have come out in the past weeks to make our events with Rosemary Gallant, Patrick Chovanec and Paul Haenle so successful. We are deeply honored and humbled to have had the chance to bring leaders at all stages of their careers together this year, and it is in that spirit that we present the next event.

 Jim Sciutto

Jim Sciutto is Chief of Staff and Senior Advisor to US Ambassador to China Gary Locke, a post he has held since December 2011.

Prior to accepting this political appointment, Sciutto was ABC News’ Senior Foreign correspondent. Based in London from 2002-2011 and then in Washington, Sciutto reported from more than 50 countries in Europe, Asia, Latin America, Africa and the Middle East, including more than a dozen assignments each in Iraq, Afghanistan and Iran. He contributed to all ABC News broadcasts and platforms, including “World News,” “Nightline” and “Good Morning America” and also anchored “World News” and “Good Morning America.”

In 2010, Sciutto won the Edward R. Murrow award for his reporting from Iran during the 2009 election protests. In 2008 he was awarded the George Polk Award for Television Reporting for his work from Myanmar, as well as a Citation for Excellence from the Overseas Press Club. Sciutto has defied government restrictions to report undercover from Myanmar, Zimbabwe and Iran several times.

He won Emmy awards in 2004 and 2005 for best story in a regularly scheduled newscast, covering northern Iraq for “Iraq: Where Things Stand.” He was nominated for other Emmys in 2005 for outstanding coverage of a breaking news story for “Crisis in Beslan” and in 2007 for Good Morning America’s “Around the World” series. In September 2008, Sciutto published a book based on his reporting experiences in the Middle East, entitled “Against Us: The New Face of America’s Enemies in the Muslim World,” published by Random House. Publishers Weekly called it “deeply insightful” and “captivating”; Booklist, “much-needed light on dark geopolitical realities”. ABC News’ Charlie Gibson said “It’s a solid job of reporting, a personal journey of discovery and a wake-up call for all who read it.”

Prior to joining ABC News in 1998, Sciutto was Hong Kong-based correspondent for Asia Business News, an Asia-wide TV network owned by Dow Jones. He covered China, and the region from Mongolia to the Korean peninsula to Southeast Asia. Sciutto’s first job in television was as moderator and producer of “The Student Press,” a weekly public affairs talk show for U.S. and Canadian college students broadcast on PBS.

Established in 2005, Project KickStart provides students from rural areas with the opportunity to pursue higher education, by paying for their first year’s tuition and expenses at a Beijing university.  The rising cost has made it increasingly difficult for many rural families to send their children to university; thus, students with tremendous academic promise are forced to relinquish their chances for a brighter future. Project KickStart raises money to help students realize their dreams and offers them a foundation on which to build their academic careers.  To date, PKS has sponsored 17 students to attend Peking U., Tsinghua, and other first rate universities; six of them have already graduated and found employment.

WHO ARE WE AND WHAT IS THIS EVENT?

Since 2003, we have been hosting networking mixers for graduates of foreign schools studying, working or living in Beijing. This mixer marks the first of many All Universities Mixers in 2012. For the 9th year running, we continue to remain a non-profit and inclusive organization, dedicated to providing networking and social opportunities to new and old expats, young graduates, and professionals in Beijing.

At each gathering we try to select a “new” venue (and there seems to be an endless supply of them in Beijing). On this occasion, we have selected the Loong Bar at the JW Marriott at China Central Place (near DaWang Lu).

We will be offering fantastic drink specials for our attendees, however, space is limited, so remember to arrive early! All alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks will be 50% off for attendees.

Remember to bring your business cards as this should be largest business networking event in Beijing.

The All Universities Alumni Networking Mixer is where students and graduates from different foreign universities come together to network. Feel free to forward this invitation on to others. Club presidents, please send this invitation to your members as always.

Our past events have had great turn-outs! Participating schools in the past include Yale, UC Berkeley/Haas/Boalt, Cornell, Harvard/HBS, MIT/Sloan, Kellogg, Stanford/GSB, Cambridge, Oxford, Columbia, Chicago GSB, NYU, Brown, Princeton, Georgetown, U of Washington, UCLA, U of Texas, Thunderbird, INSEAD, plus many others. We expect most if not all of the schools to be represented.

The proceeds from this Mixer will be donated to help fund the All Alumni Ball 2012 (May 12th at the Hilton Hotel). The Alumni Ball is an ambitious project brought to you by over a dozen alumni associations in Beijing, and it is our first attempt at hosting a black-tie affair for university alumni and friends. We would like to give special recognition to the alumni club leaders of Brown, Carnegie Mellon, Columbia, Cornell, Harvard, Johns Hopkins, MIT, Northwestern, NYU, Oxbridge, Princeton, Stanford, UC Berkeley and Yale. Have you ever stood in front of a classical Chinese landscape and wondered how to tell if it is a masterpiece?  Or even where to start looking?

Would you like to understand better why Chinese ink painting has inspired and enlightened sophisticated viewers for more than a thousand years, and why it is valued so highly that it has become the hottest area of the global art market?

We invite you to a workshop that will teach you how to better analyze and appreciate traditional Chinese painting.  The experience is built around an exclusive preview of 24 paintings by Wu Changshuo (1844 -1927) – thought of by many as “the Cezanne of China” – before the selection is exhibited in a major American museum later this year.  The workshop will help you comprehend not just the beauty of the art, but also its deeper philosophical, emotional, poetic, historical and religious content.

Your hosts, Craig Yee and Chris Reynolds (BK’ 99), are Stanford- and Yale-educated art curators and educators, and manage several important private collections of traditional Chinese paintings.  They have lectured and organized exhibitions at major Chinese and Western institutions such as the Asian Art Museum, Honolulu Academy of Arts, Museum of Fine Arts Houston, The Society for Asian Art, and Tsinghua University.  They also have co-taught a popular Masters’ degree course on Art Management at Hong Kong Baptist Visual Arts Academy.  Mr. Yee and Mr. Reynolds are experienced in teaching both Chinese and foreigners with widely varying degrees of art knowledge how to understand and connect with this quintessentially Chinese art form.

This is a private 1.5 hour session only for the Yale community, and capacity is limited to 20 people.   Your RSVP will be processed on a first-come first-served basis.  Preference will be given to Yale Club members.

Please arrive promptly, or you will disrupt the structured educational program.

We are expecting 300 prominent Beijing local and international residents, among them US Ambassador Locke and UK Ambassador Wood. Come enjoy the evening’s events as well as craft beer and sparkling wine.

World-renowned primatologist, conservationist and UN Messenger of Peace, our founder, Jane Goodall, has inspired hundreds of thousands in China since her first visit to China in 1998. 2012 will mark Jane’s thirteenth visit to Beijing. In honor of her visit we will be hosting An Evening With Jane Goodall Gala Dinner. All funds raised will be used to continue dedicated Roots & Shoots projects like school wide recycling programs, organic gardens, volunteering at animal shelters and collaborating on the world-wide No Shark Fin campaign. We hope you can join us!

Chi Heng Foundation’s social enterprise arm is independent from Chi Heng Foundation’s charity arm and is not subsidised by the donations that Chi Heng Foundation collects for sponsorship to AIDS-impacted children in China.

More information about Shenqiu: Shenqiu is located in Henan Province. In the 1990s, many poor peasants in Central China sold blood to earn extra money for a living. Many blood collection stations operated illegally with unsanitary practices for blood collection. As a result, it is estimated that as high as 60% of the adult population have been infected with HIV in some villages. Shenqiu is such a village. Many parents have already died of AIDS and those who are still alive are suffering from the disease or have been widowed by it. Some of them live in such dire poverty that they cannot afford to feed, clothe or educate their children. Many children lost their parents because of AIDS. Most of these orphans do not have HIV themselves as their parents contracted the virus after they were born. These children, however, still have to endure poverty, sickness in the family and discrimination. Chi Heng Foundation organises the trip to show care, support and respect for the villagers suffering from or impacted by AIDS by encouraging and playing with the children, dining with the families and visiting an eco-bag workshop set up by Chi Heng Foundation’s social enterprise arm to hire HIV infected women to generate employment opportunities for local families supported by Chi Heng Foundation.

More information about Chi Heng: Chi Heng Foundation (CHF) was founded in 1998 and is a registered charity in Hong Kong. The philosophy of “Chi Heng” is to put “wisdom into action” to help the underprivileged. CHF’s work in China focuses on providing comprehensive care and support to AIDS impacted children, with education being the main focus. Since 2002, CHF has been providing assistance to these children in Central China, so that they can continue their schooling. So far, CHF has cumulatively sponsored more than 13,000 AIDS impacted children and youths. CHF has set up local offices in Henan, Anhui and Yunnan Provinces to follow up on the needs of the children and provide timely assistance. With over 200 volunteers for AIDS Prevention and Education program in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Xi’an, CHF has intervened over 100,000 high risk people. After years of hard work, CHF’s work has gained wide recognition and commendation. Supporters of CHF include individuals and various institutions domestically and abroad. With the support of Jet Li One Foundation, UNESCO, Global Fund and Clinton Foundation, CHF has successfully implemented various relief projects to help AIDS impacted children and AIDS Prevention programs. For more details, check out http://www.chihengfoundation.com/index_en.html

ChART Experiences, Contemporary Chinese Art, Open House, Youth Programs, ChART STOP and More!!!

Born in Changsha, Huang Xiaoliang is taking the photography scene in China by storm. His work is poetic and nostalgic, drawing inspiration from childhood memories and the impact of urbanization on the environment. ChART invited Huang to participate in the Open House project. He created his first series of animated videos and a series of four photographs. Projected on the walls of a 5 – story walkup apartment housed within a local Chinese community, Huang documented visitors interacting with his work. If you are interested in learning more about this project or would like to add this work to your collection contact: info@chartcontemporary.com.

TALK ART, spearheaded by ChART Contemporary’s Co-founder KC Vienna Connolly encourages young people to explore and express ideas through art viewing while improving their English communication skills. ChART recently, organized a TALK ART program for a group of University students from the Philippines, which was followed by a gallery walk highlighting the most impressive exhibitions on view in 798.  If you are interested in learning more about how your child can get involved contact kcvienna@chartcontemporary.com.  Special thanks to David Ben Kay and his team at Yuanfen~Flow for supporting our mission of bringing together art & people.

ChART STOP is a curatorial experiment and platform for creatives to meet and engage with the local community and Beijing’s art scene. Located on the road dividing the art world and the local Chinese community in the Caochangdi art district. Directly opposite ChART STOP, we face the minimal red brick buildings designed by Ai Weiwei, which are teeming with collectors, art dealers, commercial galleries and designers. To our left and right, we find ourselves sandwiched between local families living in spaces ranging from 10–50 sqm. Children play hide and seek behind parked cars while retired men and women perch on small stools gossiping the hours away, fanning themselves to escape the summer humidity.       ChART STOP is open Tuesday – Friday from 10:00 am – 6:00 pm.     Please STOP by or call to make an appointment. + 86 138 1092 9464
